What is the EIC Accelerator?

The EIC Accelerator is the flagship programme of the European Innovation Council for deep-tech startups and scale-ups. You receive up to €2.5 million subsidy for innovation development and optionally up to €15 million equity investment. Total budget 2026: €634 million. Two-step process: short proposal followed by full proposal with interview.

Who is EIC Accelerator 2026 for?

The EIC Accelerator is intended for ambitious SMEs with breakthrough innovation and serious EU or global growth potential. The programme focuses on deep-tech: hardware, biotech, energy, climate, materials, AI, quantum, spacetech.

Funding levels

  • Grant component: up to €2,500,000 subsidy
  • Equity component: up to €15,000,000 direct investment by the EIC Fund
  • Blended financing: most winners receive grant plus equity
  • Grant subsidy rate: up to 70%
  • Project duration: 12 to 24 months for the grant part

Eligibility requirements

  • SME established in EU member state or Horizon Europe associated country
  • Innovation at TRL 5/6
  • Scalable business model with EU or global potential
  • Strong team with technical and commercial expertise
  • Clear path to commercialisation within 5 years

The two-step application process

Step 1: Short Proposal

A concise application plus pitch video. Submitted continuously via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. Step 1 success rate: approximately 30%.

Step 2: Full Proposal

If positively assessed, you are invited for the full proposal. Cut-off dates 2026: likely March, June and October. Final success rate: 5-7%.

For less ambitious projects national routes are often more realistic: WBSO, MIT R&D, and DEI+. EIC is for the top 5% of SME innovators scaling globally.
